How to choose an amazing location for your wedding photos

Modern Wedding Posted: September 14, 2012

Wedding photos are the one thing that you'll have forever from the big day. So you should make sure they're awesome! One thing many couples don't take the time to consider is where to have their portraits taken. Your photographer will capture the day as it happens, but you should also think about a location that fits with your personalities, the style of your wedding and will make a beautiful backdrop. We decided to ask an expert, so we chatted to renowned wedding photographer Warrick Cramer of Chateau Photography, and he gave us some pointers on location selection for wedding photos that really stand out.

"Location selection is one of the most important components for wedding photographers.  So many couples overlook locations for wedding photos and entrust the photographer to make the decision for them. When I meet couples I always discuss the theme of the wedding and from that I offer a few ideas around the location settings.  It is so important to select locations that will match your wedding theme.  As an example if you choose a classical theme - it is probably no point selecting modern architecture for a location."

"Also thinking about the time of the year is important, always have a backup plan!  You never know what the weather will do, what events are taking place, protests in the City, road works or accidents on the road.  This all can have an impact on time.

Album design should be considered when taking into account locations, thinking about where it will fit in the overall design.  A good album should tell a story of the wedding day from beginning to end.  Remembering what you do on the day is what selection you have for album design.  Only selecting one location or similar locations will mean multiple pages looking the same."

"Locations should reflect your personality, your relationship and should mean something to you both. Planning locations can be overwhelming and tiring - but don't give up as it will pay off in the end!

The amount of time to allocate to locations is always difficult to estimate too however, give yourself, your bridal party and photographer enough time to enjoy the experience and have a bit of fun as the day goes by very quickly. Guests waiting in wedding are always a concern however is it expected to have a delay between ceremony and reception, these people are family and friends and will understand."

"Most weddings which I photograph, couples will allocate 2 - 3 hours for location photos - which is an ideal time for get some great photo variety without being rushed.

Photos in a wedding album are for life - and photos always get handed down.  So spending the time in considering what you both like as a couple, will help to produce a better end result."

Thank you so much to Warrick and the team at Chateau Photography for offering their expertise in this matter, as you can see they have a lot of experience selecting incredible locations for wedding photography! And a striking location really does make all the difference for your portraits.

Chateau Photography are AIPPaccredited, and have won a slew of awards, including AIPP Silver in 2010, International Aperture Award Bronze in 2008 and 2009, and Silver International Aperture Awards in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
